Why is it called Tequila?
Tequila is named after the town in Mexico
called Tequila. The town's origin can be traced back hundreds of years to the Aztec
Indians. A Nahuatl speaking tribe called the Tiquilas established the settlement, which is
about 35 miles northwest of Guadalajara. Tequila is a small hillside town located at the
foot of a dormant volcano in the state of Jalisco. Tequila is now home to over thirty
tequila factories.
Small factories and a scattering of houses give way to the endless fields of tequila
plants, and finally lead to the town itself. Tequila's streets are lined with brick houses
and surrounded by rolling hills that seem to stretch on forever. Almost every building in
town, except the town cathedral, is covered with tequila advertisements.
The residents of Tequila are very friendly and religious, when the cathedral bell chimes,
everyone stops what they are doing to face the cathedral. Virtually all of the town's
17,000 inhabitants depend upon the tequila industry for their livelihood.
